Wednesday: Are We The New BioTech Lab Rats?

Genetically Modified Foods Unsafe?
Overwhelming evidence to support this conclusion is now compiled in the book “Genetic Roulette - Seeds of Deception”. The book documents lab animals with damage to virtually every system studied; thousands of sick, sterile, or dead livestock; and people around the world who have traced toxic or allergic reactions to eating GM products, breathing GM pollen, or touching GM crops at harvest. China Buys Sonic Weapon from US Company
There was a surprising appearance at CIEPE, the Asia-Pacific Police Logistics and Equipment expo in Beijing last month.

Amongst the displays of high-tech police equipment was the LRAD - Long Range Acoustic Device - made by American Technology Corporation (ATC). LRAD is an ultra-high-power loudhailer that can be used for crowd control, often described by the media as a “sonic weapon”. It was famously used to drive off Somali pirates in 2005. Are We Moving into Another Era of ‘Abrupt’ Climate Change?
Will the next large-scale manifestation of global warming prove to be just another blip in time or, as Mike Tidwell put it in a recent Orion piece, a violent “snap” — signaling a fundamental shift in our planet’s climate? The idea, also advanced by noted environmental writer Fred Pearce in his latest book, has everything to do with what scientists call “abrupt” climate change. Aussie aid to Burma may be ‘rebadged’
Aid officials have warned that Australia’s shipment of aid to Burma will almost certainly be rebadged as the property of the Burmese military government.

Portions of the shipment are also likely to be siphoned off by corrupt officials following the May 2 cyclone which has left up to 100,000 people dead, the Australian Newspaper reported on Wednesday.

Wednesday: Wrapping Up Some Loose Ends

Exxon Offers to Buy Homes Built on Toxic Soil
Exxon Mobil is offering financial assistance to 19 homeowners after toxic chemicals were found in the soil of a neighborhood near its Torrance gasoline refinery.

The oil giant, which posted record first quarter earnings last week of almost $11 billion is offering to buy 10 homes in an area where elevated soil vapor levels were found. (Link from Ninja Sue)

The Race to Create the First Solar Airplanes is ON!
The last barrier to greener transportation is up in the air and if these newly designed planes can get up there, the future of air travel may look decidedly different. While cars have been going green for decades, airplanes have remained behemoth fuel-gulping modes of transportation. EcoGeek put together a list of ways in which air travel is gretting greener…but there’s a long ways to go. (Many thanks to Ninja Gene for the link!)

Tonight’s Track of the Day will peak your curiosity! The track is titled “WTF?”, and is by Saul Williams, a.k.a. Niggy Tardust, and is from the album “The Inevitable Rise And Liberation Of Niggy Tardust”.

Tuesday: Monsanto, Revisited

Pay Monsanto, or Starve
Picture yourself as a seasoned farmer on the Canadian prairies. You’ve been working your farm for fifty years, with your wife working at your side. Despite the vicissitudes of life, and heavy pressure from ever-enlarging mechanised farms around you, you’re still there. Then, one day, you find a large seed and chemical company has filed suit against you - because they’ve found their genetically engineered plants on your land. Right-wing organization paying kids for denying global warming
The right-wing organization WorldNetDaily (WND) is rewarding children for “debunking” global warming in a new video/essay contest. “The contest was launched early in 2008 and was designed to highlight the absurdities, untruths and downright lies that children are being taught daily about ‘climate change’ in public school,” the site states. Tuesday: A Listener’s Request

Loyal Fox’d Up! listener, David from Maine, has requested that Jon play a very special track this evening.

The song is from the band Funkadelic, and is the title track from their album “Maggot Brain”.

From the Wikipedia entry:
“The original recording of the song, over ten minutes long, features little more than a spoken introduction”.

Monday: A Tribute To ‘Humph’

Over the weekend, the world lost Sir Humphrey Lyttleton, at the age of 86. Jazz musician, writer, composer, and chairman of “I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue” since the early 70’s on the BBC, Humph, as he was known, was a true master of entertainment. Not only was he the U.K.’s most important jazz musician, he had a wit and comedic timing that was razor sharp and second to none. I was late to discover Humph. I was hooked instantly to “Clue”, very possibly the best radio comedy panel show of all time.

The Track of the Day is his landmark jazz hit from 1956 “Bad Penny Blues”.

By 1948, he had formed a band with the clarinettist Wally Fawkes. That year he went to France’s Nice Jazz Festival, where he met his idol, fellow musician Louis Armstrong.

Armstrong always spoke warmly of the man he called “that cat in England who swings his ass off.” (from the BBC Obituary)

Humph was still touring with his band a few weeks ago, which serves as proof that music and laughter keeps the mind young. Today, we pay tribute to a legend in the purest sense. I am among millions who will miss you.

Wednesday: Plant Loss Leads To Sick World

Biodiversity loss will lead to sick world
The world risks wiping out a new generation of antibiotics and cures for diseases if it fails to reverse the extinction of thousands of plant and animal species, experts warned Wednesday.

Biodiversity loss has reached alarming levels, and disappearing with it are the secrets to finding treatments for pain, infections and a wide array of ailments such as cancer, they said, citing the findings of a coming book. (Thanks to Ninja Gene for the link)

Wind Power Produces 123% of Residential Energy Demand in Rock Port, Missouri
That’s not a typo in the headline. The meters are running backwards and they’re exporting the 23% extra.

Rock Port, Missouri, is a small city of 1,300 people, and they just made history by being the first city in the US to be 100% powered by the wind, also making them #1 in the US for percentage of renewable energy. (Thanks to Ninja Gene for the link)

Ninja Betsy sent along a link to a book titled: “It’s Just A Plant - A Children’s Story of Marijuana”. To find out more about the book, and how to order, please click here.

Denmark Generates Too Much Wind Power
Denmark has a problem with their wind turbines. Apparently its generating too much power from wind.

Right now, they are generating about 20% of their total electricity from wind power and on windy days that percentage can double which has placed some strain on the electricity grid due to extreme fluctuations. In western Denmark, the price of electricity can sometimes drop to 0 on a windy day which leaves utilities trying to find ways to offload the excess power. What a “good” problem to have! Low-Cost Electric Cars On The Way
Norwegian automaker Think Global said Monday it planned to sell low-priced electric cars to the masses and will introduce its first models in the U.S. by the end of next year.

The battery-powered Think City will be able to travel up to 110 miles on a single charge, with a top speed of about 65 mph, the company said. It will be priced below $25,000.

Monday: Time For Another New Coca-Cola?

Coca-Cola’s ‘toxic’ India fertiliser
Waste product from a Coca-Cola plant in India which the company provides as fertiliser for local farmers contains toxic chemicals, a BBC study has found.

Dangerous levels of the known carcinogen cadmium have been found in the sludge produced from the plant in the southern state of Kerala. (Many thanks to Ninja Gene for the link!)

Food Rationing Confronts Breadbasket of the World
Many parts of America, long considered the breadbasket of the world, are now confronting a once unthinkable phenomenon: food rationing. Major retailers in New York, in areas of New England, and on the West Coast are limiting purchases of flour, rice, and cooking oil as demand outstrips supply. There are also anecdotal reports that some consumers are hoarding grain stocks. (Many thanks to Ninja Gene for the link!)

Global Warming May Have Shifted Jet Stream
In a change that is consistent with global warming computer models, the jet streams that govern weather patterns around the world are shifting their course, according to a new analysis by the Carnegie Institution published in Geophysical Research Letters.

Tuesday: The Monsanto Discussion Continues

Monsanto and their hellish perversion of the food chain has so enraged Jon, that he’ll continue his discussion from last night on the evil this company does. It truly is a wonder that any of us have anything to eat!

Tonight’s Track of the Day is from the band Tool. The song “Lateralus” is off their album of the same name, and was inspired by a conversation Jon had with caller David on last night’s show. David posted a great video on the forum explaining the math.
